Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment
Pope Francis announced that the theme for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in October 2018 will be "Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment." The Holy Father has asked that the voices of young people be heard and seriously considered in the Synod; “The Church also wishes to listen to your voice, your sensitivities, and your faith; even your doubts and criticism.” (Pope Francis) Church leaders all around the world have been charged with the responsibility to hear and capture the words of young people that can be shared with the Bishops at the Synod.
In the Diocese of Columbus we would like to participate in collecting the voices of young people to be heard at the Synod of Bishops. We are proposing two methods to collect the thoughts of young people and we need your help to do it. The first method is to have individual youth and young adults, as well as parents of young people and ministry leaders complete the surveys below by September 1, 2017. The second method is to have parishes, Catholic high schools, college campus ministries, and other groups serving young people conduct focus groups with adolescents and young adults. Below is a guide for facilitating a focus group with adolescents (ages 16-18) and a guide for facilitating focus groups with young adults (ages 18-29). These special meetings will briefly discuss the Preparatory Document for the 2018 Synod and allow for greater discussion around the questions posed by the Vatican for the Synod. The responses from focus groups to the questions can be submitted electronically via the form below or mailed in to the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry (197 E. Gay St., Columbus, OH 43215) by September 1,
